Covariance Adjustment in Randomized Experiments and Observational Studies

چکیده

By slightly reframing the concept of covariance adjustment in randomized experiments, a method of exact permutation inference is derived that is entirely free of distributional assumptions and uses the random assignment of treatments as the “reasoned basis for inference.” This method of exact permutation inference may be used with many forms of covariance adjustment, including robust regression and locally weighted smoothers. The method is then generalized to observational studies where treatments were not randomly assigned, so that sensitivity to hidden biases must be examined. Adjustments using an instrumental variable are also discussed. The methods are illustrated using data from two observational studies.

Randomized and Nonrandomized Experiments Page 1 Can Nonrandomized Experiments Yield Accurate Answers? A Randomized Experiment Comparing Random to Nonrandom Assignment

A key justification for the use of nonrandomized experiments is that, with proper adjustment, their results can well-approximate results from randomized experiments. This hypothesis has not been consistently supported by empirical studies. However, past methods used to study this hypothesis have confounded assignment method with other study features. To avoid these confounding factors, this stu...

Estimating treatment effects using observational data.

THE RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL (RCT) IS THE ideal method for measuring treatment effects. Participants in clinical trials are randomly assigned to a treatment or control group. Randomization reduces biases by making treatment and control groups “equal with respect to all features,” except the treatment assignment. When randomization is performed correctly, differences in efficacy found by statis...

Strategies for Improving Precision in Group-Randomized Experiments

Interest has rapidly increased in studies that randomly assign classrooms or schools to interventions. When well implemented, such studies eliminate selection bias, providing strong evidence about the impact of the interventions. However, unless expected impacts are large, the number of units to be randomized needs to be quite large to achieve adequate statistical power, making these studies po...

Evaluation of psychiatric interventions in an observational study: issues in design and analysis

Characteristics of randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies of psychiatric intervention effectiveness are contrasted. Randomization drives treatment assignment in an RCT, whereas clinician and patient selection determine treatment in an observational study. Strengths and weaknesses of randomized and observational designs are considered. The propensity adjustment, a...
